This is going to be embarrassingly one sided...

Panama has no business being in the World Cup. Such a shame that we couldn’t make it!

This is the problem with continental qualifiers.

I am willing to bet everything I own that if my country were playing this afternoon we wouldn't be losing 5-0 at half time.

Actually, we played this England team in the qualifiers for this world cup. We lost 2-0 in Malta and 4-0 in Wembley.

In one half Panama have done almost as badly as Malta did in 180 minutes.

Probably...

Swe 2nd (the one used yest) is awesome

The blue one? Here's a bit of trivia. The story goes that Brazil's second jersey (together with the first the world's best selling soccer kit by a landslide) is the same as Sweeden precisely because of them.

Back in the 1958 World Cup Brazil faced Sweeden at the finals on (or near) Stockholm. They wanted to use their traditional yellow jersey but Sweeden refused on account of them having the home turf rights to use theirs (of course being yellow as well.) Some say the king himself refused as yellow was the royal colour. Whatever happened there fact is Brazil had to go into town and look for some 10 non yellow shirts and sew their crest on.

Blue was the only color they found on the few stores open.

Of course they went on to win the match wearing blue and with the youngest scorer ever in a WC, Pelé.

It was also how lifting the throphy up in the air became a traditional worldwide custom. After handing out the throphy the photographers asked Bellini, Brazil's captain), to lift the trophy as they couldn't get a clear shot with the amount of people around. Bellini did so and the photo of Brazil with it's captain lifting up the throphy in the air became a symbol as the first team ever winning it outside of their own continent. :P

And this is why I prefer the EURO to the World Cup. Non-European teams always suck with the exception of a couple of South American teams, but the average quality is higher.

In my opinion they should scrap continental qualifiers. There might be more Europeans and South Americans playing but there will still be Asians/Africans who make it especially if there is no seeding. For all you know you might get 4 big European teams in the same group eliminating each other and another one with only one European team.

Another interesting idea which is difficult in practice and will never happen would be to not have qualifiers and let everyone participate... a true world cup.

Do Germany and Italy do so as well, while not doing that with any other country? :P We've had close losses with all of them.

I'm pretty sure that if England needed to beat Malta by 6 goals in a last qualifier in order to qualify for a World Cup, they would manage to score them.

The motivation that England have in this World Cup match is not comparable to the motivation they have while playing a qualifier against Malta when they're comfortably ahead in the qualification group.
