Juanfran is 32 years old and the philosophy implemented by Atletico Madrid in the last few seasons is that every player of that age or above renews season by season which, though laudable, could now cause them problems with Barcelona and Bayern Munich circling.
The idea of the player has always been to continue wearing the red and white, and in fact to retire with it, but the truth is that the next step must come from the club.
"Making an exception would create a problem in the dressing room," an unnamed Atleti source has been quoted as saying.
Gabi and Moya have both had their contracts extended in this way but the question, as far as the right-back is concerned, is whether the club will contact him regarding a renewal.
His current contract ends in 2018 and so from January he is able to arrange a free transfer to a club of his choosing, should he desire and should the Rojiblancos not have put any offer on the table.
Barcelona's Sergi Roberto can play in another position, whilst Bayern will be hamstrung by the retirement of Philipp Lahm.
The No.20 has preferred to focus exclusively on football, but the board are aware of his suitors.
Diego Simeone's opinion on the future of one of the players who was already in the group when the Argentine took over on the bench in December 2011 will be fundamental.

Five titles

Juanfran had arrived at Atletico that same year, although in January and to replace Simao.
When El Cholo appeared, he fixed Juanfran as his right-back of choice and from there, along with Miranda, Godin and Filipe, he formed a defence that helped to win to five titles.
Curiously having played 35 league games in each of the previous four campaigns, Juanfran has seen his contribution reduced to 23 this season, firstly due to injuries and then by the competition with Vrsaljko.
