Thiago Alcantara bullish about Bayern's Champions League chances
Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara is convinced his side can make a serious assault on the Champions League this season.

"We are still one of the three, four teams that everyone wants to beat," the 26-year-old Spain international told ESPN FC ahead of Bayern's second-leg tie with Besiktas on Wednesday. The German champions travel to Istanbul with a seemingly unassailable 5-0 lead from the first game in Munich three weeks ago.

Thiago believes that "only small details" prevented them from making it to the final of Europe's top club competition in recent years and has credited coach Jupp Heynckes with making a number of improvements that could see the 72-year-old repeat his 2013 Treble with the Bundesliga giants.

"We have the same team but a mentality that's a little bit better," Thiago said.

"Maybe it's because the people know the trainer from before, and they want exactly what the trainer wants. This fusion makes the team a little bit more aggressive."Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti was fired after a 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage in September. Heynckes' return has seen Bayern go on a devastating run of 25 wins, one draw and one solitary defeat in 27 matches across all competitions.

Better attitude and application from the players aside, Thiago hinted at more balanced tactical approach as the reason for the team's return to form.

"We have this German mentality of attack, of [playing on] counters and we are doing great," he said.

"We have this freedom to play, [while] keeping more safe behind. And we are conceding less goals than before."

As a result, confidence is high that Bayern can lift the European Cup for a sixth time this May.

"The Bundesliga is important for sure, and the cup is as well," Thiago said. "But winning the Champions League is the point of being at a club like Bayern."

Are we going to ignore how awful he was today?
Blame Rafinha for the go ahead goal but still that was 1 (although giant) play.
Blame Lewy for all the missed opportunities

But with all that said I thought the worst player out there today for the entire game (not just 1 play) was Thiago.
How many times did he turn the ball over?

IMO today was Thiago’s best UCL big game for Bayern. He is in no way responsible for the defeat. In fact I believe that our midfield trio of James, Thiago and Javi kept their midfield in check for large parts of the game. So much so that Isco had to be taken off for another Winger/forward.

Robert, Thomas, Franck and Hummels all had decisive and clear chances to score goals and Rafinha’s error proved fatal.

Ok best might have been the wrong word but compared to his awful performances in big UCL games in the past, today he was much much better.

And I like how you ignored the rest of my post.

Also, Results are the only thing that matter and the blame for today’s result can in no way be attributed to Thiago.

I'm a big supporter of Thiago, but this time his haters are right... He had an awful game. Never seen him making so many bad and imprecise passes.

Our midfield did well without the ball, but was atrocious with it. I understand Madrid is a though team to play against and their midfield is as strong as ours (thus cancelling each other), but regardless... The awful passing was sub par.

He is one of the best midfielders in the world. I'm gonna put this one on Heynckes. Consistently been misusing him, playing him as a 10 or not playing him at all. I think he's lacking in rhythm. We saw with Ancelotti what Thiago Is capable of when he is given trust.

His positional play was fine but he had too many sloppy passes. He also made good ones but they were big passes that went no where

He was literally only bad for the first 10 minutes he was on the pitch (as an early injury sub, no less)....His numbers were fine, he was consistently being doubled up and still asked to handle ALL the distribution. Check the stats for yourself.

Agree. First fifteen minutes were terrible. After that he was doing well enough. Even made one of the few physical challenges for our team. He did not drag the team forward though.

Thiago was the worst in Bayern's 2:1 loss to Real Madrid

Bad

Thiago Alcântara
He was introduced to replace Arjen Robben. He was not up to speed with the play at first, and his passing was poor. This progressed thoughout the team as he went ghost the same way he did last year in this fixture. He needs to push more especially with James Rodriguez taking what was his spot in the team.
