On paper, he looks like a good enough backup. However, he doesn't offer something different than Muller. I would like a backup striker who at least can do something different than the ones on the pitch. Maybe a good dribbler, a fast guy, a big header, etc.

Re: Sandro Wagner

"So many numbers were not free," said Wagner at the club's own station. "The 2 was offered to me, among other numbers." The 14, which he last wore at TSG Hoffenheim and previously at SV Darmstadt, "was unfortunately taken, this is my favorite number". In Munich this is worn by Juan Bernat.

Even the 3, 18 or 31 would have been free in the Bayern squad, as well as the 33, his long-term number with Hertha BSC, or the 39, which he had chosen in his early days in Hoffenheim. So why now the 2? "The 2 I find quite fitting, it is my second attempt here," said Wagner, who celebrated his first Bundesliga debut in August 2007 in a Bayern shirt. "That's why I found the number very likeable and I'm happy now - and I hope it brings me luck." [source]

I crunched the numbers for goals+assists per 90 for each team's primary (IMO) forward this season. Here is where Wagner would rank:
1. Aubameyang - 1.05
2. Petersen - 0.98
3. Lewandowski - 0.95
4. Burgstaller - 0.85
5. Finnbogason - 0.81
T6. Werner, Uth, Harnik - 0.80
9. Haller - 0.78
10. Volland - 0.70
11. Kruse - 0.68
12. Wagner - 0.64
T13. Guirassy, Ibisevic - 0.57
15. Terrode - 0.41
16. Muto - 0.40
17. Origi - 0.38
18. Stindl - 0.35
19. Wood - 0.17

And for the past calendar year of DFB play:
1. Werner - 1.15
2. Wagner - 1.08
3. Stindl - 0.70

Overall if you average out his club+country play he is worth just under 1 goal/assist per game.

Reminds me when we had Gomez and Mandzukic on the same roster, hopefully it yields the same results...

After signing the contract, he said: “I’m delighted. A long journey for me is now at an end and I can return to my home, my club. I’m very happy that it’s come off. Bayern are the best club in Germany and one of the best in the world. When I got the offer, I didn’t have to think about it for long.”

Salihamidzic also expressed his delight: “In Sandro Wagner we have another Germany international coming to Bayern. We’re convinced that Sandro will enhance our squad with his class and his experience.”

Interesting, Wagner would have been in Bayern II near the end of Salihamidzic's time with us as a player.
