Max Eberl

Postby JANCKER » Wed Nov 30, 2016 6:03 pm

Max Eberl (born 21 September 1973 in Bogen) is a German former footballer who currently works as Borussia Mönchengladbach's director of sport.

Eberl's career as a professional footballer began in 1991 as a defender with Bayern Munich. A highly rated youngster, Eberl represented Germany at the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia. During the tournament he started the group games against Ghana and Portugal.

After making only one Bundesliga appearance in two years at Munich, Eberl dropped down a division to the 2. Bundesliga to play for VfL Bochum. Eberl spent four seasons at Bochum, split evenly between the top two divisions, before moving to Greuther Fürth. He spent only 18 months playing for Greuther Fürth before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach halfway through the 1998–99 season. Eberl saw out the rest of his career with Mönchengladbach, retiring in 2005. In a career lasting over 200 games in the first and second Bundesliga, Eberl did not score a single goal.

Nerlinger considers Eberl to be the "top variant" for the job at Bayern

One, who knows the job of the sports director with the Bavarians from his own experience, is Christian Nerlinger. The ex-professional practiced the office itself from 2008 to 2012. Nerlinger considers Eberl to be more than suitable. "He has learned this position from the start, proved stress resistance and has a proximity to FC Bayern. Eberl would be a top variant, "says Nerlinger, who, however, also sees Philipp Lahm as a candidate for the role.

It's an opportunity he can't refuse.

If he really has a Bayern release clause as media talked about, it's not for nothing.

He will come here.

Nah. Leave the position open for Lahm or Schweini.

Was just trying to say: do we want him? He's proven, alright, but does that make him a better fit for Bayern? No idea... Torn on this one... But if Uli wants him, I trust him...

I think it's fundamental for the club to begin transitioning to the next management generation and those should be Lahm and Bastian. The thing that distinguishes us the most from other top clubs is having our ex-legends in management positions. It's a huge advantage and I'd argue a matter of identity too.

True... But is it wise to get them in these positions so quickly after their active careers? Don't know either...

I think we are in a good position to insert them right now. Uli and Kalle are still going strong and can mentor them. We haven't had a Sporting Director since Sammer left (how many months has it been?) and we have been fine. Adding Lahm and Bastian couldn't possible hurt and it's a great chance for them to learn the trade under the supervision of Uli and Kalle.
