We should be thanking our lucky stars for Manu right now...without him we probably lose by three.

“He's just the best for me, there's no doubt about Manuel Neuer, he's such a fantastic player, he'll prove it again in the future,” Lloris told Sport1, having shared the field with Neuer as France came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 on Monday.

“Judging by all that he has brought Bayern Munich and Germany, this discussion over his form is not fair. It's not easy if you have not played football for nearly a year, he's still on a great level and a great goalie.

“As goalkeepers, we’re always very dependent on the team.” [source]

Neuer was among one of the absolute worst players against Dortmund tonight.

Sadly, it looks like he's currently on decline ever since that nasty foot injury. Made it too easy for Paco to score past him.

At this point, Ter Stegen is unquestionably Germany's best GK and should rightfully a starter in the NT.

However, Neuer is lucky that he's still the captain and will stay between the sticks for that reason alone.

Word. Many people predict that he is never going to be the same guy after such a long injury..and sadly, but i think they were right. He is not looking like the same guy.

He is declining. Should have done better on Reus’ second goal. Neuer from two years ago would’ve pulled out a phenomenal save to deny that second goal.

Also, his hesitation resulted in that penalty (although Marco was looking for contact and baited Neuer well) The Neuer of old would’ve rushed out and smothered the danger without hesitation.

Germany have Ter Stegen but Bayern are in serious trouble now.

So, I think we have to ask.

When does Neuer's captaincy start coming into question?

Crisis in his first season as Bayern captain.
Crisis in his first major "cycle" (WC 2018) as Germany captain and showing little-to-no signs of improving any time soon.
Crisis in his second season as Bayern captain.

Players against the coach. Mutiny. Not obeying manager's instructions (Neuer just recently straight-up said players weren't following Kovac's instruction). Attitude problems from Robben, Ribery, Wagner, James, etc (I'm usually one to defend James in this situation, think his conduct has mostly been justified but think a 'stronger' captain would've likely stymied that a bit). Reports of players not training well, disobeying other "non-tactical" instruction from the manager. Etc, etc, etc. And on top of that - his form has just not been very good.

I'm not saying Neuer is to blame for all of these things - or necessarily that he is the cause of any of them. But certainly you have to ask if "Neuer the Captain" is really working. I still believe in "Neuer the Player" and think he will get back to top form (probably...hopefully) and I have no problems with "Neuer the Person" but I think that as a captain his leadership has been shown to be lacking time and time again, perhaps....

Been having the same thoughts. And I really like Manu the person.
