"With Sandro we'll have much more to celebrate"

An already spectacular game had yet another significance. Of all players, recently returned Sandro Wagner wrapped up the points with his first Bundesliga goal for FC Bayern, against his old club. Therefore no surprise the afternoon was something “really special” for the striker.

“My first goal for Bayern obviously means a lot,” said a delighted Wagner, who bellowed his joy into the night sky. He clearly savoured the moment. “Munich is my home. It’s amazing to finally score my first goal for my club.” Everyone could see the new signing’s redemption after a decade of waiting: Wagner fervently celebrated in front of the south stand, where he used to cheer on his team in times past.

The striker watched the first 84 minutes from the bench. Observations of the game had a strong impression on the Germany international, especially the moments immediately after going 2-0 down. “I looked to see if anyone was nervous. But nobody was nervous! Everyone thought they could turn it around,” described Wagner. “That is FC Bayern, they go 2-0 down but just keep going. It’s impressive.”

“He’s a great lad”

Wagner himself played his part in the win. “It’s good for a striker to score regularly, good for the confidence,” remarked the 30-year-old, who rewarded himself shortly before the final whistle in his third appearance off the bench. Despite his joy the Munich native didn’t want to overstate his contribution. “It’s my job to score goals,” affirmed Wagner. “I hope it will continue in the coming weeks and months.”

His teammates all celebrated with him. “It’s a brilliant story that he’s scored his first goal for us against his former team,” said Thomas Müller. “You can see how much it meant to him.” Niklas Süle was pleased, “Sandro’s hard training has paid off.” And goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, who sees Wagner as a “great lad” and “important player for us,” knows that “with him we’ll have much more to celebrate!”
