When Ivica Olić fired FC Bayern into the 2010 CL Final

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Apr 27, 2020 5:25 pm

It was the day on which absolutely everything went right for Ivica Olić! On 27 April 2010 FC Bayern were the visitors in the 2nd leg of the Champions League semi-final at Olympique Lyon. Nine years after triumphing in Milan, the German record champions finally wanted to return to the final of Europe's premier competition. With a 1-0 home win behind them, the Reds already had a good springboard for the game in France.

Olić rewards a strong Bayern side

Olić celebrates with teammate Thomas Müller after his crucial opener in Lyon.

In the Stade de Gerland, the Bavarians underlined their absolute will to win right from the start. And someone who had already proven his commitment and fighting spirit countless times in an FC Bayern shirt emerged as the big match winner. With 26 minutes gone, Ivica Olić struck the first blow. Following some great preparatory work by Thomas Müller, the Croatian received the ball with his back to the goal before spinning around at lightning speed and firing the Reds into the well-deserved lead. It was the all-important away goal.

Insatiable hunger for goals

With his right, with his left, with his head - Olić was unstoppable that day.

The Reds continued to look lively, always pushing forward and they took another huge step towards the final in the 67th minute. Hamit Altintop stabbed a pass through to Olić and the forward netted to make it 2-0. But the indefatigable workhorse's hunger for goals that evening was not yet sated. Twelve minutes from time, Philipp Lahm punted a cross to the front of the goal. Olić scored with a header, almost singe-handedly firing FC Bayern into the final match for the biggest prize in European football in the process.
