Van Buyten: Everyone has to give everything

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Mar 05, 2012 6:40 pm

On Monday, the pain of Saturday's 2-0 defeat in Leverkusen was still keenly felt in the Bayern camp. "It's hard to get over," said Thomas Müller, "it was the way we lost. It happens so often in football: if you fail to put away your chances, you'll eventually let one in." That in a nutshell was exactly the story of the BayArena clash, the result of which has allowed Dortmund to extend their lead in the standings to seven points.

However, two days after FCB's sixth league defeat of term, everyone at the club was keen to move swiftly on. "We have to do our homework," said Germany international Müller, "we have a hard week of training ahead of us." The schedule opens with two sessions on Tuesday, and concludes next Saturday with a crucial Bundesliga home fixture against Hoffenheim, a match which ushers in a spell of five games in 15 days.

Striker Mario Gomez issued a rallying cry: "We mustn't hide our heads in the sand, we have to believe in ourselves and go for it against Hoffenheim." It is essential Munich take all three points on Saturday. "Naturally, we're not writing off our chances of the title," continued Gomez, "there are still ten games to go. But it's not something we can be thinking about at the moment. What's needed now is hard work."

In a moment of self-criticism, Gomez acknowledged that Bayern were currently "not living up to our high standards. But in football, it can all change from one day to the next." Indeed, the situation at the club could soon appear much more positive, as good results in the must-win meetings in the Champions League return at home to Basel on 13 March and the DFB Cup semi-final away to Mönchengladbach on 21 March would go a long way towards turning the season around.

Hard work ahead

"We need to rediscover our old selves and work really hard. Every player has to do everything for the cause," urged Daniel van Buyten, currently only able to assist his team-mates off the field due to a metatarsal injury. "We need total concentration," continued the Belgian colossus, "every one of us has to give everything."
