Van Bommel suspended for Milan tie

Bayern will be without Mark van Bommel for both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against AC Milan after the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body handed the inspirational midfielder a two-match suspension.

"We cannot and will not accept this decision, and we will appeal against this decision accordingly," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge announced.

Van Bommel misses the first leg in Milan with an automatic one-match ban for the second yellow card he received in the Round of 16 return match at home to Real Madrid, but the UEFA disciplinary body has also decided to activate a further one-match suspension initially imposed for a probationary period of a year.

The "suspended sentence" was handed down following the Round of 16 meeting in Madrid after Van Bommel was adjudged to have made inappropriate gestures to the home crowd.

"We're more than bewildered and angry about this verdict," Rummenigge continued. "Mark van Bommel's alleged offence in the return match against Real Madrid attracted two yellow cards, and not a red card for a sending-off offence. We do not understand why this should constitute breaking the terms of a probationary penalty."
