Unlucky Deisler sidelined until after Christmas

The customary smile on Sebastian Deisler's face did not last long on Wednesday lunchtime. In the act of seizing possession from Hasan Salihamidzic in a two-man chase for the ball, the midfielder abruptly pulled up clutching the back of his left thigh. In the afternoon, club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt confirmed the bad news that Deisler had torn a hamstring and will play no further part on the pitch in 2006.

The gifted player only resumed training four weeks ago after an eight-month lay-off following knee surgery. He has made five substitute appearances since then, and was slated for a place on the bench in the last two fixtures of the year away to Mainz and Aachen. The 26-year-old is now expected to resume duty at the start of mid-season training.

Rest for Lucio, Ismaël up and running

Defender Lucio is also not 100 percent fit, sitting out Tuesday and Wednesday training with an ankle problem. However, he is not rated doubtful for Saturday's trip to bottom club Mainz, assistant boss Seppo Eichkorn reported. The Brazil World Cup winner is expected to train with the squad on Thursday.

There was better news of Valerien Ismael. A full five months after a double leg fracture, the defender resumed light jogging on the training ground on Wednesday. Supervised by rehab coach Oliver Schmidtlein, the Frenchman undertook a gentle 15 minute reintroduction to physical duties.

Return in New Year

Valerien was originally not expected back on the training ground until the end of the week, but his recovery has proceeded a little quicker than that. The centre-half is hoping to resume the squad programme in mid-January.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ismael back. But - argh - bad news for Deisler. Must come as such a blow for him when he's already put up with so much.
