Tymoshchuk set for key role in team

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Jul 12, 2011 4:00 pm

The pre-season programme at Bayern began some two weeks ago, so it is basically much too early to begin speculating on what the first choice line-up might look like. However, that does not mean Anatoliy Tymoshchuk shouldn't feel reassured by words of praise from boss Jupp Heynckes: "Tymo is an outstanding character, and he'll be playing more often than in previous years."

It is hard to imagine a heavier hint than that, doubtless intended to encourage the Ukraine international to keep up the good work in pre-season so far. As he approaches his third season with Germany's biggest club, Tymoshchuk could be set for his most important role in the team to date.

Determined to play every game

However, the seasoned 32-year-old knows it is still early days yet. "I've heard what the coach said. However, I had quite a few games last season, including 27 in the Bundesliga. That's far from nothing, although naturally, you want to feature in every match," the versatile midfielder told fcbayern.de.

Tymo often operated at centre-half last term, a position he has also been filling in training recently, but he learned the footballing trade in defensive midfield. Where he might play in the coming season remains unclear. Heynckes said both positions were options, but the boss does have a preference. "He's very professional, very alert, and has a certain ease of movement. He cracks the occasional gag too," the coach said, dropping another massive hint with his next statement: "He's predestined for defensive midfield."

Contract until 2012

Tymoshchuk's contract expires at the end of the coming season, and he has made no secret of his desire to remain in the Bavarian capital if possible: "FC Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world, and I'm really settled here." His family is happy too, although the player is all on his own at the moment, as wife Nadiya and daughters Noa and Mia are relaxing on vacation in Greece. "It's wonderful for the kids, but I'm already missing them terribly," the Ukrainian admitted.

The upside to that is the lack of distractions at home in Munich as he turns his full concentration to football. "After such a short time back in training, it's much too early to make any definite statements, because we're likely to play a different way under Jupp Heynckes," Tymoshchuk commented, "but we've trained very well up to now."

Tournaments will shed more light

The two major tournaments in the last two weeks prior to the first competitive match, the Liga total! Cup and the Audi Cup, will give a much more concrete indication of how far the new line-up has progressed. "But up to now," Tymoshchuk said, "it's all gone according to plan, and that's the most important thing." It is a slightly cautious assessment from the experienced midfielder with the squad number 44.

However, there is no hint of reticence in his citing of the club's targets in the wake of a season without silverware. "We want to win things, especially the trophies a team like Bayern is generally in a position to win." Naturally, he was referring to the Bundesliga and DFB Cup. Like all the other players, Tymoshchuk's comments on the Champions League are that the aim is to get as far as possible, especially with next season's final in Munich, but that FCB must first qualify for the competition proper.

Bothered only by the weather

His current confidence is based on the harmonious atmosphere in the dressing room. "Everyone's really enjoying his work. The only problem is how hard it is in the current heat," he said with a smile, before setting off for the players' quarters after another punishing workout in the morning.

We are after Vidal, the responsible people at the club confirmed that. Heynckes has been praising just about every player on the squad, doesn't mean they'll all play.

Heynckes is speaking about the players he has now. If we get Vidal, things might change, but what he actually said is what we were saying all along, that Tymo is predestined (which IMO means specialized) for a DM, not a CB, or a RM (or the others positions LVG had put him to play)...
