Three points a must at home to Cottbus

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Nov 21, 2008 6:00 pm

After unnecessarily dropping two points in last week's 2-2 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayern are now determined to resume their pursuit of the teams above them in the Bundesliga table by recapturing the form which previously brought five league wins on the trot. "In the four remaining games before the winter break, it's vital we don't hand our rivals any more "gifts" like we did in Gladbach," urged chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge ahead on Saturday's home meeting with struggling Energie Cottbus (Live in English from 3.15 pm CET on FCB.tv Web Radio).

Bayern currently lie three points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and second-placed TSG Hoffenheim. The top two face tricky away tasks this weekend, Bayer in Bielefeld and Hoffenheim against fellow promoted club FC Köln, so victory for the champions against Cottbus could well narrow the gap at the top. "We want to catch up a few points before the winter break. Our goal is still to be top at Christmas," declared Bayern boss Jürgen Klinsmann.

Current form: Bayern in third meet bottom club Energie, so there is no doubt who starts as favourites. Anything less than a clear-cut victory will rate as a disappointment for Jürgen Klinsmann and his men, and would represent a setback in the champions' quest to recover top spot in the standings. By contrast, Cottbus are under no pressure whatsoever, especially as they beat Karlsruhe last week to double their total of victories this term. "A lot of the mental pressure's come off," commented skipper Timo Rost after the morale-boosting win. However, Bayern know they must in no circumstances underestimate the men from Cottbus, for although the Bavarians have won all five previous meetings in Munich, FCB have lost twice in Cottbus, most recently a 2-0 defeat on 15 March this year.

Team news: Germany international Lukas Podolski (hamstring) is a late withdrawal from Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann's squad. Hamit Altintop resumed the team training programme on Friday for the first time since surgery on a foot injury, but both he and Willy Sagnol (rehab) are not yet match fit. Cottbus are without Bulgaria international Stanislav Angelov (sinusitis) and centre-back Mario Cvitanovic (foot).

Player to watch: FCB shot-stopper Michael Rensing has ordered his defence to beware Cottbus and Albania playmaker Ervin Skela. "He's dangerous, especially at set-pieces. He also plays a good pass," the keeper warned.

What they say:

Jürgen Klinsmann: "Starting tomorrow, we have four demanding weeks ahead of us. I'm certain we'll approach the game with the appropriate seriousness. We have to keep the pace high from the off. We have to break Cottbus down and claim all three points."

Martin Demichelis: "After the disappointment in Gladbach, I hope we react well as a team tomorrow and start aggressively."

Bojan Prasnikar (Cottbus coach): "Obviously, we're rank outsiders, but we're not taking a white flag with us to Munich. If we're courageous, anything can happen. The pressure on the team before the Karlsruhe game was enormous, because we simply had to win, but it's a totally different kettle of fish when you're away to Bayern."
