Three-day break for hard-working stars

Following Lucio's departure to join up with the Brazil party, the attendance at squad training on Friday could be counted on less than the fingers of two hands: just eight first-teamers were available for the morning workout. Even Felix Magath himself was absent, away at a UEFA coaching seminar in Geneva. Assistant boss Seppo Eichkorn duly stepped in, but in stark contrast to the sweat-inducing incline exercises of the previous day, fun came to the fore in the pre-lunch session.

The players formed teams of two for a football-tennis tournament. Makaay and van Bommel took on Scholl and Dreher, with Santa Cruz and Dos Santos lining up against Salihamidzic and Demichelis. "We got through a lot of work yesterday, so we let them play football-tennis today," Eichkorn explained.

Out come the medicine balls

However, to round things off for the morning, the serious business of physical conditioning returned with a vengeance as fitness coach Werner Leuthard supervised the players through a workout designed to strengthen the musculature. Newcomer Mark van Bommel made a first acquaintance with a much-loved device on any training ground overseen by Felix Magath, namely the medicine ball.

"I think he might have felt something today, but that's completely normal," Eichkorn commented, reckoning the Dutch ace was a little heavy-legged from the week's exertions. The stars had trained more intensively than normal over the last few days to compensate for the lack of a match at the weekend, Eichkorn explained. "Van Bommel has made a good impression so far. He's working very hard on blending in with the team," the assistant coach observed.

Three days off

The star signing declared himself delighted with the fitness-based routines since his arrival. "I need it," he confessed, as in common with a number of the squad, he has yet to reach 100 percent fitness after the World Cup. "So I'm pleased we still have a few days until the next match," he remarked.

Following another punishing workout in the afternoon, the squad departed for three days off to regenerate, before the next scheduled session on Tuesday. Van Bommel is flying to Barcelona, where he will tie up the final remaining details of his family's move to Munich.

Six matches in three weeks

The rest of the team will make the most of a brief time-out to build up reserves of energy ahead of the first intensive phase of the season with matches in the German Cup, Bundesliga and Champions League. The next break for internationals arrives in early October, before which Bayern face six matches in the space of three weeks.
