‘The players showed unbelievable character’

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Aug 31, 2013 12:20 am

At the fourth time of asking, Bayern have finally added the European Super Cup to their extensive collection. In a scintillating contest matching the 2012 Champions League final for tension and drama, the current holders of the continent’s elite trophy defeated Europa League winners Chelsea on penalties, helping to make amends for the heartbreaking defeat on home soil 15 months ago. Naturally, the FCB dressing room was brimming with elation. “I'm so happy! I'm totally in love with FC Bayern," declared Franck Ribéry.

Reaction to the UEFA Super Cup triumph

Matthias Sammer: “The trophy is very important to us because we need the success to keep on coming. Also, we lost the German Super Cup final. We were angry about that. It would have become difficult if we'd lost again today. We're not over the crest yet, but we're on our way to reaching it. Congratulations to the team! Congratulations to Jupp Heynckes! Congratulations to Pep Guardiola! He was magnificent before the match and at half-time. He was a leader for his team and did a fantastic job."

Pep Guardiola: “I'm very, very proud of my team, and of Jupp Heynckes. He is the most important person and the reason why we're here. Many thanks to him for the chance of playing for this trophy. I'm very happy with the way we played. We've missed too many chances in the last three matches, but we never stopped attacking. These players have unbelievable character."

Franck Ribéry: “We played so well, and we had lots of chances. We kept fighting through to the last minute, and that's superb! I'm so happy! I'm totally in love with FC Bayern. I'm at home here, this is my family. I enjoy myself out on the field, just like I did again today. It's not easy for our coach, he's under a lot of pressure. This match was so important to him. I'm delighted for him now."

Manuel Neuer: “Fortunately, we managed to win the penalty shootout this time. It was very important, for psychological reasons. The penalties before [the save] were superbly taken, ours included – I'd have been delighted to see the same thing in the Champions League final two years ago. But what can you do as a goalkeeper? You simply try to react to the taker’s run up – and I chose to dive to the left."

Javi Martínez: “I'm very pleased, about the match, for the team, the coach, and obviously about my goal. It was a very tough match against a top team. It was very hard. It's an important victory because we lost the other Super Cup final, so we're overjoyed."

José Mourinho (Chelsea coach): “That was one of the best Super Cup finals. Normally these games lack the intensity and quality we've seen today. It was a very good game. In my opinion, the better team lost. That's football, these things happen. We were better in the first half, but we had problems for 20 minutes in the second half. We were the better team with ten men. Bayern have won, they scored one more penalty than we did. Congratulations to FC Bayern."

Petr Cech (Chelsea keeper): “It's always hard after a game like that. It was just as hard for Bayern two years ago as it is for us now. We've conceded the equaliser in the last few seconds, but we played for a long time with a man less. Defending the lead was hard. Overall, it was a great game from both teams, very entertaining, and Bayern are the happier team today. They worked very hard to win the match."
