Ottmar Hitzfeld has not yet agreed to accept the post of Switzerland national coach after he leaves Bayern in the summer, the 59-year-old declared on Saturday. “There’s no deal as yet. All I’ve said is that I have two openings, either as Switzerland coach or as a TV expert,” Hitzfeld stated ahead of the 203rd Munich derby.

The Munich boss also denied reports he had held talks with the Swiss FA. “We might well sit down together over the next four weeks, but nothing’s been decided yet.“

However, the 59-year-old acknowledged his interest in succeeding current incumbent Jakob “Köbi“ Kuhn after this summer’s Euro 2008. “Representing a country, preparing a team to hit form at exactly the right time and qualifying for the 2010 World Cup would be a good transition before I give up coaching. The expectations and the pressure wouldn’t be any less in Switzerland, but it would definitely be manageable,“ Hitzfeld was quoted as saying by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Hitzfeld’s long-serving assistant Michael Henke would not follow the head coach to the Alpine Republic, however. “I don’t speak French, but I’d need an assistant who does, because half the Swiss players come from the west of the country,“ Hitzfeld explained.
