Swiss foes in Champions League last sixteen

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Dec 16, 2011 12:40 pm

Bayern have been handed a tough but manageable task in this season's Champions League first knockout round after Germany's most successful club were paired with crack Swiss outfit FC Basel in the draw for the last sixteen.

The ceremony, held at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland from midday on Friday and conducted by UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino with help from Bayern's own Paul Breitner, featured seven former winners of Europe's elite club competition, with a total of three teams from Italy, two teams each from England, Spain, Germany, France and Russia, and one each from Portugal, Switzerland, and - for the first time - Cyprus.

The men from Munich will be aware of the severity of the task against the side spearheaded by seasoned campaigner Alex Frei, and who eliminated Manchester United in dramatic fashion in the group stage. However, Jupp Heynckes and his men will be confident of making it to the last eight after beating the Swiss FCB home and away in last season's group phase.

Bayern are away in the first leg at St Jakob Park on 14/15 or 21/22 February 2012. The decisive return, sure to be played in front of a capacity 66,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena, with 90,000 ticket applications received even before today's draw, is on 6/7 or 13/14 March. This year's final takes place at the magnificent stadium in the north of Munich on 19 May 2012.

Champions League first knockout round draw in full:

Olympique Lyonnais v APOEL Nicosia
Napoli v Chelsea
AC Milan v Arsenal
FC Basel v Bayern Munich
Bayer Leverkusen v Barcelona
CSKA Moscow v Real Madrid
Zenit St Petersburg v Benfica
Olympique Marseille v Inter Milan
