Sporting spring surprise at home to Inter

While Bayern were busy overcoming Spartak Moscow in Munich, Sporting Lisbon entertained Italian champions Internazionale of Milan in Tuesday's parallel Group B fixture, the Portuguese runners-up recording a surprise 1-0 victory courtesy of a stunning Caneira strike just after the hour mark.

In an often scrappy encounter with no quarter given or asked, the match became bogged down in midfield and chances were few and far between. The home side opened the brighter of the teams, but the Italians increasingly found their feet to neutralise the threat.

Out of the blue, Caneira netted the only goal of the evening on 64 minutes, controlling a Tonel free-kick with his chest before drilling a thunderbolt of a shot into the far corner of the net. Inter's cause was dealt another blow just a few minutes later when summer signing Patrick Vieira was dismissed for a second bookable offence, with sub Hernan Crespo unable to help his side recoup the deficit.

Very important result for Bayern. We should now be favourites to win the group :)

We will have to be more careful in our own game against Sporting now, they've shown they can hang with the big boys, if even for only one game. Although with Inter not having Viera for the match at the San Siro hopefully that will help Bayern get away with a win in Italy.

I felt that if we were ever to win the CL we would always need luck on our side. no matter how powerful a club is, luck is needed to make it all the way through and win it all. just look at villarreal and arsenal last year. Our club this year I think is the best since we started bringin in leverkusen guys a couple years back starting in 2002. We are pretty solid and I like it, we just need the chemistry and we are there. No we are not an amazing super club but we have the pieces. And with the draw for our group it is definitely capable of winning because though Inter has some great new faces they need to learn how to work together first. And Sporting is very solid too. BUT, we have Inter next in Milan, which now would be the best time to play them. Sporting beat them and they are behind already, PLUS Viera took a red card and will be out vs Bayern. And then in the pretty rough match Sporting managed to pick up 3 yellow cards, so if just one of them pick up a yellow vs Spartak then they will be missing one of theirs vs Bayern. If we can win the group then we will face a second spot in the group stages, which would make it more managable than usual instead of drawing one of the titans maybe we can get one of the shocker teams. And then from there on out who knows. But so far its lookin good

To note that we have one of the best, if not the best, defensive line-ups in Europe. Lahm and Sagnol are world class full backs, and Lucio and Van Buyten are pretty good as well.
