Soldado seals last-gasp Valencia victory

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Nov 18, 2012 2:20 pm

Roberto Soldado struck at the death for Valencia on Saturday evening to ensure the Spaniards warmed up for Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Bayern on a winning note. The striker netted an 89th minute penalty to seal a 2-1 victory over Espanyol Barcelona and send his team up to sixth in the La Liga standings overnight. Mauricio Pellegrino's men have now won five of their 12 league fixtures this season.

In a robust encounter featuring 11 yellow cards and two dismissals, Valencia underlined their formidable strength on their home Camp de Mestalla turf, where they have seven wins, a draw and no defeats so far this term. Pellegrino's side are also improving fast, as they are undefeated in their last five matches and have won four of them.

With the exception of suspended left-back Aly Cissokho, Pellegrino made no concessions to the upcoming Bayern clash and fielded a first-choice team against Espanyol. Jonathan Viera gave the home side a 16th minute lead with a precise low drive, but the visitors fought back and Samuele Longo levelled on the half-hour.

Restless Mestalla crowd

The visitors from Barcelona lie second from bottom of the Spanish standings but proved a real handful on the night, winning the shot count 11-10 and finishing with 53 percent of the possession. The increasingly restless home crowd jeered and whistled their team's lacklustre performance at times in the second half.

However, it was to end well for Pellegrino''s side due to a controversial late penalty, as an assistant alerted the referee to a Hector Moreno handball in the box. Moreno and his team-mate Sergio Garcia were both sent off for protesting too volubly about the decision, but Soldado was unmoved by the tumult and stroked home the spot kick with a minute left on the clock.

"We had the better of the chances, but we basically didn''t deserve the win," Pellegrino acknowledged afterwards, "but I''m still satisfied because my team gave everything and never gave up."

Valencia team against Espanyol:
Diego Alves - Barragan, Rami, Ruiz, Guardado - Albelda (Banega 67), Tino Costa - Feghouli, Jonas (Valdez 80), Viera (Bernat 68) - Soldado
