Shaqiri and company knuckle down to work

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Jul 03, 2012 7:20 pm

Claudio Pizarro and Tom Starke were the earliest arrivals. At around 1.30, the two seasoned newcomers emerged from the Säbener Strasse underground car park, smiling as they headed for the dressing room. A few minutes later, they were joined by youngsters Mitchell Weiser and Lukas Raeder, who were in turn followed by Dante. The sixth new boy from outside the club, Xherdan Shaqiri, was then accompanied into the performance centre by Daniel van Buyten.

Ahead of his first training session at the club, Dante told FCB.tv he had "a very positive feeling". Still a little shy, the defender made no secret of how much he was looking forward to the new challenge: "I want top fitness as quickly as possible, so I can help us hit our targets." The decision to leave Mönchengladbach for Bayern "wasn't difficult," he said, "Bayern is one of the five best clubs in the world." The player then made his way into the dressing room.

At 3.20 pm, the FCB rookies took to the practice ground with their new team-mates, initially posing for photos. Shaqiri, Dante, Pizarro, Starke, Weiser and Raeder were joined for the shoot by Emre Can. The FCB youth product, already on the fringes of the first-team squad last term, is officially a new signing. Patrick Weihrauch, newly promoted from the reserves to the professional ranks, was absent for the first training session.

The workout began with fitness coach Marcelo Martins conducting the warm-up, although Pizarro was restricted to an individual programme. "It's an old injury which he has to shake off first," boss Jupp Heynckes later explained. Pizza will spend the full week on sports rehabilitation exercise.

Heynckes: They all knuckled down

The rest of the new faces threw themselves into the 98-minute session with gusto. "They were all very committed," Heynckes commented. Speaking afterwards to FCB.tv, Shaqiri noted the special atmosphere at the club: "The methods are definitely different compared to Basel." The Swiss international said he had a "wonderful" first day in his new job and feels "really good. Bayern is the perfect club for me!" The other summer arrivals would surely agree.
