Senior figures pledge to pool energies

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Nov 13, 2007 7:06 pm

After Bayern’s first defeat of the season, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge decided to raise a warning flag. “Karl Hopfner, Uli Hoeneß and I feel the trend has not been quite as positive since the game in Bochum. Two points from our last three league games isn’t enough, our lead’s down to a single point. It’s a signal we’re obliged to take note of,“ the chairman told Monday’s AGM.

Following an unprecedented spending spree in the summer, Rummenigge described FCB as “hot favourites” for the Bundesliga title. “We’ve invested a huge amount of money and we need success,“ the former striker continued. “On Saturdays, we don’t just face our opponents of the day, we face the entire country,“ Rummenigge warned, recalling the jubilant reaction of the Stuttgart crowd last weekend when the video wall passed on news of goals for title rivals Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV.

Strayed from winning ways

“Fundamentally we’re extremely pleased. Especially in the early matches, the team was pure class. It was tremendous to watch,“ Rummenigge commented, but the side had strayed from winning ways in recent weeks. The current break for internationals was a chance “to regroup and pool all our energies, and then focus on our forthcoming matches. I’m convinced we’ll pull it off.“

The chairman revealed he had already spoken privately with coach Ottmar Hitzfeld who he explicitly greeted as “my friend” at the AGM. “However, friendship to me doesn’t mean always clapping someone on the back after a win, but also coming forward with constructive criticism.“ Following Bolton Wanderers’ late equaliser in the UEFA Cup last Thursday, Rummenigge publicly censured Hitzfeld’s policy of early substitutions.

Rummenigge’s olive branch

“It wasn’t about apportioning blame, it was about success for Bayern Munich. I was at the end of my tether, but I’m also the first to tell Ottmar: forget it, let’s pull together and make sure things go better around here from now on,” the chairman declared, extending a verbal olive branch from the stage. “Later, I’ll go and offer Ottmar the hand of friendship personally, not because I’m looking to end a dispute, but because as a partner and friend I don’t want these matters discussed in public, which has been the case in the last few days.“

“There’s only one man here responsible for training, tactics and team selection, and that’s Ottmar Hitzfeld,” Rummenigge explicitly confirmed. “But I still believe it’s sometimes not wrong to include the officials in certain decisions beforehand and talk them through with us. We have an unbelievably tough job ahead of us this season.“ Rummenigge is convinced a united effort will see the team return to winning ways soon: “We have four more matches before Christmas. I promise you this: we’ll sit around the Christmas tree celebrating the fact we’re top of the league.“
