Schweinsteiger rated doubtful for Milan clash

Wednesday evening's meeting with Milan ranks as the biggest event of this week, but Bayern's Säbener Strasse training ground resembled a street festival on Easter Monday as some 1,500 diehard fans watched every move and incident of the morning squad session. Cheers and applause greeted any player who pulled off a good piece of play.

Both the supporters and head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld were heartened by the appearance of Lucio, Owen Hargreaves and Hasan Salihamidzic, all of whom sat out Saturday's 2-1 away victory against Hanover and also missed Sunday training. The trio now appear certain starters against the Milanese.

Schweini plagued by knee injury

In the meantime, Bastian Schweinsteiger has emerged as the biggest cause for concern. The man who scored the winning goal in Hanover took a knock on his left knee during Saturday's match, although the player first complained of pain in the course of Sunday. "Losing him would be a heavy blow," Hitzfeld commented, "but we're still hoping he can play."

On the other hand, Martin Demichelis (strain) looks an increasingly unlikely starter. "He's extremely doubtful," Hitzfeld confirmed. Mehmet Scholl will definitely play no part in the midweek action after pulling a calf muscle in the Monday session.

Makaay promises total effort

The focus of the penultimate workout before the big match was set pieces and shooting practice. If the positional options tried out in training are anything to go by, Salihamidzic is set to take over at right-back from long-term casualty Willy Sagnol. Provided Schweinsteiger is fit to play, the only remaining question concerns the right midfield berth, where Hargreaves could be handed the job if Hitzfeld chooses to continue with in-form Andreas Ottl as the holding midfielder.

The forward line is likely to comprise Lukas Podolski and Roy Makaay. "Nothing's decided yet. We have to give it everything we have for another 90 minutes," the Dutch goal-getter declared. "But we all know what we have to do on Wednesday," the club's leading scorer promised.
