Schweinsteiger laid low by mystery complaint

Some 4,000 supporters basked in glorious sunshine and temperatures above 20 degrees at Bayern's scheduled training session on Thursday morning. The only problem was the non-appearance of the team, at least not on the training ground. Instead, the squad remained indoors for a 90-minute programme of regeneration and physiotherapy.

"Recharging our batteries was an urgent necessity," coach Ottmar Hitzfeld explained after consulting club medical supremo Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt on the day after defeat to AC Milan. "The last few weeks have cost us a lot of strength." Friday will also be given over to physical and mental recovery.

Mystery over Schweinsteiger's knee

While most of the squad takes a brief pause in preparation for the Bundesliga run-in, Bastian Schweinsteiger remains a cause for concern. The midfielder has suffered with a swollen knee since Sunday and withdrew from Wednesday's meeting with Milan, but could even be facing several weeks on the sidelines.

"It could be three days, or it could be three weeks. He's very, very doubtful for the Bayer Leverkusen fixture on Sunday," Hitzfeld announced. The reasons for the 22-year-old's injury problem continue to puzzle the experts. "We've not found anything obvious in the knee," the coach remarked.

Diagnosis still to come

Schweinsteiger took a knock on the knee in last Saturday's trip to Hanover, the joint swelling up overnight. The problem has failed to respond to treatment, with the medical unit beginning to suspect a delayed reaction to an insect bite suffered by the player several years ago. "It's one of a number of possibilities," Hitzfeld explained. The club is now waiting for lab results on fluid drained from the knee on Tuesday.

Waiting was the order of the day for the crowds at the Säbener Strasse on Thursday too. The first players emerged at a quarter after midday, but the fans got their reward as the entire squad spent more than an hour satisfying the autograph hunters' requests.
