Schweinsteiger: It's like the athletics World Cup

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Jan 03, 2012 6:50 pm

Watching Jupp Heynckes out on the practice ground, you would never imagine the boss is 66 years old. "Hard passes, they have to reach their man!" he'll shout. Heynckes, a model of passion and enthusiasm, lives and breathes football - and he expects the same from his players. "You have to be hungry for success, otherwise you'll get nowhere. The training sessions are very, very good. All the players are highly motivated," the coach reported on Tuesday.

Since arriving in Qatar, Heynckes has supervised his troops in training three times. With the exception of Rafinha, due in Doha on Tuesday evening after unforeseen problems with his entry visa, all the players are throwing themselves body and soul into the demanding workload. "This team is blessed with a huge hunger for success. The lads are on fire, the training conditions are perfect, and they're focusing hard," director of sport Christian Nerlinger told FCB.tv.

The first workout of the day started shortly before 10 am, and was dominated by passing and positional exercises. The stars headed for the showers just under two hours later, before gathering again for lunch. The players then retired to their rooms for afternoon rest, before returning to the training ground for the second session of the day at around half-past four, this time under cloudy skies and buffeted by a swirling wind.

Heynckes' training plan

The session was both rigorous and punishing: following a series of coordination and stability exercises, the players swapped their football boots for track shoes as the focus switched to fitness. Divided into three groups, the FCB stars completed five high-paced, 1.5 km laps of the sports facility. In between laps, the coaching staff ordered up sprinting and jumping exercises. "It's just like the athletics World Cup," quipped Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The session of stamina-building exercise was not laid on by Heynckes as any kind of punishment, as the coach is very happy with fitness levels in the squad. "The players have come back from their short holiday in good shape. They're making a good impression in training," the head coach said. "I wanted them to recharge their batteries, regenerate and just do the things they enjoy," he continued, "but I did send them off on vacation with a recommended training plan."

Schweinsteiger, finally able to take part in the team programme to the full following his broken collarbone in the autumn, clearly kept to his holiday training schedule. "He's really enjoying it," Heynckes reported. The Germany international now aims to recover full fitness during the training camp, and slowly but surely pick up the first-team rhythm. "He dictates the pace in midfield," Heynckes said, "he orchestrates the play and makes quick decisions. He's class."

Buoyed by Bastian's return

Schweinsteiger's return to action could be a decisive trump in the battle for honours. "He's a vital member of the team and it's a huge benefit having him back," commented Nerlinger, "we intend to go for it in the second half of the season." For that to happen, the sweat will flow copiously over the next few days. "It'll be a hard week," Nerlinger confirmed.

That's great. Heynckes says he's satisfied with their fitness level, but it never hurts to work on it and hopefully improve it too.
