Schweinsteiger and Lahm excused China trip

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri Jul 20, 2012 2:10 pm

The Bayern squad will depart for China on Sunday evening without Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm. The club captains will instead pursue an intensive basic fitness program at the Säbener Strasse facility in Munich, before resuming the team schedule once the squad returns from China on 27 July. The news was announced by head coach Jupp Heynckes on Friday at the Trentino training camp.

"This decision began to form in my mind during the European championship," Heynckes reported. "I monitored Schweinsteiger's performances for Germany very extensively and closely. I know Bastian very well. You can learn a lot from his movements, gestures and expressions, and I drew my conclusions from that."

Schweinsteiger, whose season was disrupted from last autumn onwards by a fractured collarbone and then an ankle ligament injury, continued to complain of pain during Euro 2012. "He had recurring problems with a nerve," Heynckes explained, although the injuries themselves are "healed and forgotten."

The coach has called his vice-captain several times during the player's vacation, most recently two days ago. "He's feeling good," Heynckes reported, "I told him he should eat chocolate spread and muesli and build up strength for the weeks to come."

On Sunday, Schweinsteiger will join the remaining Euro 2012 participants for the obligatory lactate test. Based on the results, Heynckes said, the fitness staff will devise an individual training programme, set to include stamina basics, sprints, stabilisation and agility exercises, and gymnastics.

Philipp Lahm will also receive a similar training plan. "He's played every game for a number of years and always thrown himself into it," said Heynckes, "from a purely sporting point of view, it's better for him to regenerate after the Euro and join the team once we're back from China, just like Bastian Schweinsteiger."

If he comes back to training looking like a Brazilian in the twilight of his career (Ronaldo, hint hint), someone's gonna get shot.
