Satisfaction at Bundesliga sign-off for 2006

With four goals scored and none conceded, it was little wonder that Bayern’s players and officials made no secret of their pleasure following the 4-0 victory in Mainz. “This match was a satisfactory conclusion to what has been a difficult first half of the Bundesliga season,” said general manager Uli Hoeness. Striker Roy Makaay is already looking ahead to team’s next outing. “We wanted to win the last two games,” he said. “We have achieved the first part of that today, now we want to reach the quarter-final of the German Cup on Wednesday.”

What they said:

Uli Hoeness: “Apart from the first 10 minutes the team played with great concentration today. We were full of running, worked hard when we didn’t have the ball, and we were also fortunate that the goals came at the right time. In the second half we really played well, we created excellent chances and scored two fine goals. It’s noticeable that our confidence grew as the game went on while Mainz’s didn’t. This match was a satisfactory conclusion to what has been a difficult first half of the Bundesliga season.”

Oliver Kahn: “We wanted to stay on top and we’ve succeeded in doing so. In the Champions League we achieved what we set out to do, and now in the German Cup we have to make sure we go through – and then everything will look good as we head into the second half of the season. There’s still a lot of league matches to go, and Mainz can still pull themselves clear. They mustn’t give up, that would be fatal. In football anything is possible.”

Roy Makaay: “We dominated the game for 90 minutes and scored some great goals – that’s our style. Mainz isn’t the kind of team that just sits back in defence. They are very compact but try to win the ball with a pressing game. We knew beforehand that we needed to concentrate hard, but that chances would come. We wanted to win the last two games. We have achieved the first part of that today, now we want to reach the quarter-final of the German Cup on Wednesday.”

Mainz coach Jürgen Klopp: “Of course I’m disappointed. We started the game very well. A corner that shouldn’t have been led to the opening goal, and then our opponents scored a second at the perfect time. In the second half Bayern clearly stepped up a gear and scored two further goals fairly easily. This game brings to a close the first half of the championship. We need to change quite a lot of things and make sure we don’t start the second half of the season the way the first one has finished. There are two options for next year: either we go off on a farewell tour or we try to achieve the greatest escape of all time.”

Mainz’s Marco Rose: “It’s always the same – we came to the game well organised, we had a good understanding, and we launched a few attacking moves. Then we found ourselves behind from a set piece, and afterwards we sat back and allowed them to get too many crosses and shots in. But we haven’t given up and we will try everything in the second half of the season.”
