Sagnol and Van Bommel out with injury

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:50 pm

Mark van Bommel, closely pursued by fitness coach Thomas Wilhelmi, led a group also including Franck Ribéry and Daniel van Buyten in a series of laps around the Säbener Strasse on Tuesday, a scene which is now set to be replayed on Wednesday and Thursday as well.

As coach Ottmar Hitzfeld confirmed after squad training, Van Bommel, Van Buyten, Ribéry and Willy Sagnol are out of contention for Thursday evening’s UEFA Cup Round of 32 first leg trip to Aberdeen.

Ribéry return in second leg?

Ribéry is still struggling with a stretched hamstring, but is hoping to be fit in time to face the Scots in the return at the Allianz Arena on 21 February. “He’s in good shape, He’s having treatment twice a day. We’ll watch him over the next few days and see when he’s fit to play again,” assistant boss Michael Henke told .

Ribery’s confirmed absence was known in advance, but the other three withdrawals from the squad came as a surprise. Van Bommel bruised his left knee in Sunday’s Bundesliga showdown against Bremen, “but as it stands, he’s not in danger of missing Sunday’s match in Hanover,” Henke advised.

Sagnol’s precautionary break

Sagnol faces a similarly short lay-off. “Willy didn’t play for nearly a year, but he’s just gone close to the full distance three times in just a few days,” Henke remarked, “we’re leaving him at home purely as a precautionary measure. There’s no new problem with his knee.“ Sagnol was out of action for eight months with cartilage damage before returning to the starting line-up two weeks ago in Bayern’s German Cup victory over Wuppertal. The France star will pursue an individual conditioning programme in Munich before resuming the squad workout on Friday.

Belgian colossus Daniel van Buyten has yet to recover fitness after sitting out Sunday’s league clash with the flu. As a result, mid-season signing Breno is set for a debut appearance in the matchday squad. The Brazilian was making good progress in making up a fitness deficit compared to the rest of the players, Henke reported: “After what we’ve seen in training from him recently, we’d have no problem fielding him in a match.“

Jansen set for comeback

“I think it’s going very well for him now," Brazil captain Lucio commented on Tuesday. “He still needs a little time to settle, but that’s always the case when Brazilians arrive in Europe." Breno has made a handful of brief appearances for Bayern, but only in mid-season friendlies.

Finally, Marcell Jansen returns to the matchday squad for the first time since ankle surgery last November. The Germany international has been training with the team for a week now, but will almost certainly start on the bench alongside Breno in Aberdeen. In the absence of Sagnol and Van Bommel, Christian Lell and Andreas Ottl are likely starters at Pittodrie.
