Saarbrucken match report

Razor-sharp Bayern hit the goal trail on Wednesday evening in their second-to-last warm-up match ahead of the Bundesliga restart in nine days' time, running up a comfortable 5-1 win away to third division Saarbrucken, where former Munich assistant boss Michael Henke currently works as Director of Sport. The match was staged to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Saarland, one of Germany's smallest federal states.

A 35,000 crowd packed the Ludwigspark stadium to capacity, the first full house at the ground since Bayern came to visit for a 1-1 draw in the Bundesliga 15 years ago. Making light of the driving rain, the German champions soon hit their stride and raced into a 3-0 lead courtesy of Claudio Pizarro (3), Hasan Salihamidzic (10) und Bastian Schweinsteiger (13).

Home consolation

The visitors were thoroughly on top in all areas of the field after that, although coach Felix Magath criticised his men for letting the tempo drop too soon. The Bayern boss, a former player (1974-76) and general manager (1989-90) in Saarbrucken, "would have liked to see more by way of chances," he commented afterwards.

The home side punished their illustrious opponents on 63 minutes when Mustapha Hadji reduced the arrears from a free-kick, but that only served to rouse Bayern from their lethargy and sub Ali Karimi restored the three-goal margin on 73 minutes. Schweinsteiger added a fifth with ten minutes remaining to ensure the Reds set off for home in upbeat mood, with just Saturday's warm-up match in Hamburg to negotiate before the real thing with points at stake in Dortmund a week on Friday.
