Rummenigge's appeal to the spirit of 2001

Postby FCBayernNews » Fri May 18, 2012 8:00 pm

The mother of all defeats in 1999 was unique, but another lost final could yet be the catalyst for a stunning triumph. "We've missed out on this trophy once before, so we're even more motivated now," said Philipp Lahm, thinking back to the 2-0 loss to Inter in 2010. "The belief we can win this trophy is greater than it was two years ago," the club captain declared.

In 2001, Bayern wiped away the memory of the agonising defeat to Manchester United in Barcelona with victory in Milan, and history is poised to repeat itself, just as Karl-Heinz Rummenigge mused at the post-match banquet in 2010. "I'd like us perhaps to be back in the final in 2012 and then win it," the chairman said in Madrid, "let's do it like in 1999! Back then, the players had hit rock bottom, but they picked themselves up again immediately and started again from scratch."

"Back then in Barcelona, we sat down and said: we have to do this! We have the quality! And we have exactly the characters you need, with the desire you need, and who said to themselves: now more than ever!" related captain at the time Stefan Effenberg. Uli Hoeneß also believes the foundations for the triumph in 2001 were laid in Barcelona two years earlier: "In the course of the following night, we made a vow: we'll do this one more time!"

The situation in Madrid after the 2010 final was not entirely similar, Lahm revealed: "You can't simply assume you'll make it to the Champions League final two years later. Many players never make it that far, some only make it once, and we're lucky enough to be there a second time." In terms of the current team, a good proportion were already in the squad two years ago, "and we now have a lot more experience," Lahm continued, "that's why I simply have a feeling our belief is greater than two years ago."

Lahm also feels more confident about this Saturday's showdown in the light of an excellent defensive performance in the Bundesliga this season. A miserly record of just 22 goals conceded "shows we're doing far, far better in that respect nowadays." Another key difference compared to Madrid in 2010 is the availability of Franck Ribéry, who missed the Inter clash with suspension. "He could make the difference against Chelsea," Bastian Schweinsteiger declared.

Ribéry is not the only player with a craving for the title, especially after the experienced in 2010. "I took a lot of power and energy from the defeat," Arjen Robben stated, "it has to be an incentive for us all." Rummenigge's words after the reverse in Madrid now look prophetic: "We have a taste for it now."
