Robert Lewandowski sets Bundesliga record

Postby FCBayernNews » Sat Oct 26, 2019 6:10 pm

Robert Lewandowski made Bundesliga history when he scored in FC Bayern's 2-1 victory over Union Berlin. The forward is the first player to score on all of the first nine matchdays of a campaign in the league's 57-year history. He surpassed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who found the net in all of the first eight matches of the 2015/16 campaign.

"I'm glad I scored again. I'll try to continue to play well and help the team," a modest Lewandowski said after the match, declining to comment on how far his streak might go: "I'm not thinking about how many goals I've scored, I'm thinking about how we can take the next three points. That's what's in my head," he revealed. "I'm glad about the records but I don't focus on these things, I focus on football, training and sport."

FCB coach Niko Kovač had stressed Lewy's current form before the match: "He's in the form of his life, he's in top physical shape. We're really glad we have him, he's the one who keeps us at the top at the moment," the 48-year-old said at Friday's press conference. Thomas Müller added after the final whistle: "Lewy is in outstanding shape of course, as you'd expect from a good goal-getter on a run. I hope his streak goes on for a long time, it's good for us."

Last match without Lewy goal a long time ago

The 31-year-old goal-getter has not only proved his nose for goal in the German top tier. Lewandowski has found the net in all of Bayern's last 13 competitive matches. Only one player boasts a similar streak since the club's promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965: Gerd Müller scored in 15 consecutive matches in the 1969/70 season.

His goal was a first for the Pole. Lewandowski's goal against Union means he has now scored against 25 different Bundesliga sides. He has found the net against 17 of the 18 current league clubs, Fortuna Düsseldorf being the only club remaining.
