Robert Lewandowski moves up to the top three

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Dec 15, 2019 12:55 pm

The short goal drought over, the lead extended in the goalscorers' list and now level with his former coach in the all-time rankings – Saturday's 6-1 home win against Werder Bremen was not only successful for Robert Lewandowski in terms of picking up three points. After his brilliant run of 16 goals in the first 11 games of the season, Lewandowski has had to wait more than three games for his next strike.

After a brilliant pass from the outstanding Philippe Coutinho, Lewandowski scored just before half-time to put FCB ahead and in the second half he made it 4-1 with an assist from Thomas Müller. His brace takes his tally for the season to 18 goals putting him in top spot ahead of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner (16).

The Poland captain has now scored 220 goals in the all-time Bundesliga goalscorer's list and that puts him level in third place with Jupp Heynckes. Only Klaus Fischer (268) and Gerd Müller (365) are ahead of Lewandowski. "It's a great honour to draw level with a legend like that," said Lewandowski after the emphatic victory over Werder Bremen.

Heynckes was the coach of the 31-year-old in 2017/18 and he described him as "one of the best strikers in Europe." And back then he "joked with him and said I assume that he will overtake my goals tally." Since Saturday they are now level.

Lewandowski's return is even more remarkable as he only needed 305 games for his 220 goals. Heynckes (369), Fischer (535) and Müller (427) played significantly more games than the current number nine at the German record champions. In the current campaign, Lewandowski has scored 29 goals in 23 games and he doesn't look like stopping any time soon.
