Ribéry and Kahn set for comebacks

Oliver Kahn fielded shots from Sepp Maier, Walter Junghans and Bernd Dreher, while 20 yards away Franck Ribéry dribbled, passed and ran with his team-mates. Ribéry and Kahn then took each other on in shooting practice at the end of the session, much to Ottmar Hitzfeld’s satisfaction. The injury situation at Bayern showed definite signs of easing on Thursday, although neither of the world-class players has yet been given the final green light to resume playing.

“They could be in contention for Saturday,” Hitzfeld announced, as Kahn and Ribéry eye comebacks at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. The coach will watch Friday’s final training session before taking a final decision regarding Kahn.

Kahn with the reserves

Kahn, who underwent surgery on his right elbow four weeks ago, kept goal for the reserves in a warm-up game on Wednesday. “It gave him match practice,” Hitzfeld explained. The club captain resumed goalkeeping training some ten days ago.

Ribéry rejoined the squad programme on Thursday for the first time since damaging knee tendons against Bochum. “The medical unit says he’s OK, but I want to wait and see how confident he feels,” Hitzfeld said. The first impressions are positive. “You can see he’s fit and determined to play,” Miroslav Klose reported.

Van Buyten returns, Micho doubtful

Daniel van Buyten was also the bearer of good tidings on Thursday. The Belgian, sidelined for two weeks with a niggling hamstring problem, also resumed the senior training workout after joining Kahn in the reserves the previous day. “He’ll be part of it on Saturday,” Hitzfeld confirmed.

Daniel’s return is doubly good news as Martin Demichelis may not be fit for the Bundesliga clash. The Argentine suffered bruised ribs in the Cup against Mönchengladbach and reported for treatment on Thursday. “We’ll have to see if he makes it,” Hitzfeld commented. Van Buyten is standing by to deputise.
