Ribéry ruled out of Braunschweig clash

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Jul 25, 2011 5:00 pm

A moment of shock was followed by a wave of relief at Bayern on Sunday, as it was confirmed Frank Ribéry's training injury was only minor. The France star did nothing more than sprain his ankle, ruling him out of action for a week. The initial diagnosis was confirmed by the club medical unit on Monday, although the follow-up examination also found evidence of a stretched ligament.

Fortunately, the latest discovery is unlikely to hinder the player's recovery plan. The winger will be in plaster for five days, but should be fit to resume the team training programme next Monday, the day when FCB face Braunschweig in the DFB Cup first round. Ribéry will now definitely miss the match, but the 28-year-old was already hardly an option, as boss Jupp Heynckes informed fcbayern.de. "There's a difference between straightforward fitness and match fitness. I much prefer only fielding players who are 100 percent match fit."

Ribéry may yet be a contender for Bayern's opening Bundesliga fixture at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday 7 August. "Our target is to have him in the squad for the game against Gladbach," Heynckes confirmed.
