Ribéry on form, Klose & Gomez on target

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu May 27, 2010 1:00 pm

With just over two weeks to go until the World Cup in South Africa, Bayern's international stars were almost all on the winning side in a round of friendlies on Wednesday night.

Arguably the best impression of all came from Franck Ribéry in a 2-1 win for France over Costa Rica in Lens. The FCB wide man was in good form and provided the 22nd-minute cross from which Douglas Sequeira put through his own goal to level the scores, after Carlos Hernandez had fired the Costa Ricans in front on 11 minutes.

Ribéry in his favoured slot

The French were the better of the teams in Lens and created a string of decent chances, although the winning goal only arrived seven minutes from the end through Matthieu Valbuena. Ribéry was substituted a minute later in a useful warm-up for the Equipe tricolore, in which the FCB man filled his favoured left-sided role in an experimental 4-3-3 formation.

Mark van Bommel, Arjen Robben and their Dutch team-mates also ran up a 2-1 success, although the Bayern pair were rested for the meeting with fellow World Cup contenders Mexico in Freiburg. Robin van Persie struck a brace before half-time to hand the men in orange a deserved lead, with Bayern defender Edson Braafheid, currently on loan to Celtic in Glasgow, completing a half. Javier Hernandez pulled one back for the Mexicans on 74 minutes.

Five apiece for Klose and Gomez

Germany had no official friendly fixture, but hit the goal trail with a vengeance in a warm-up match at their training base in South Tyrol. Faced with a U-20 select XI drawn from the local community of Eppan, the Germans cruised to a 24-0 success, led off by five-goal men Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez. Each striker played a half of the 30-minute-each-way training ground exercise. The remaining five FCB stars in the Germany squad were rested.

Away from World Cup warm-up action, Hamit Altintop and Turkey beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in Connecticut, USA, while Danijel Pranjic and Croatia played out a goalless draw away to Estonia.
