Reds recharge batteries ahead of weekend 'final'

What was Mark van Bommel planning to do on Tuesday? "I'll take the kids to school, then we'll see after that," the player smiled on Monday. Bayern's inspirational midfielder will not have got up to much, after Ottmar Hitzfeld ordered his regulars to take a relaxing day off. Van Bommel and Co were tipped to spend the day at home recovering from the rigours of recent weeks.

Hitzfeld's plan for the coming days is to have his men recharge their batteries ahead of the Bundesliga run-in. "We've had two games a week for a while, so we need to recuperate now," the coach explained, reminding reporters that the players had been under severe mental and physical pressure of late.

Weary against Leverkusen

"We ran out of gas," Van Bommel acknowledged after Sunday's stuttering 2-1 victory against Leverkusen. The frustrating battle to claim a Champions League qualifying place in the Bundesliga and the disappointing European exit to Milan had taken their toll. "It's good to take a break and recover," general manager Uli Hoeneß agreed at the weekend.

Munich have five games to play in the German top flight this term, including a crunch showdown on Saturday away to VfB Stuttgart. The fixture represents the Reds' last chance to make progress at the expense of a direct rival. "Finally, regaining third place is in our own hands," Roy Makaay commented.

FCB fresher than VfB?

"We can put in the best possible preparations for our final against Stuttgart," Hitzfeld confirmed. The situation is different for the Swabians, as VfB meet Wolfsburg in a DFB German Cup semi-final on Wednesday. "Perhaps we'll have the edge thanks to our opponents' extra commitments this time," Makaay mused. "We can take a time-out this week, and then focus on Stuttgart."

The squad programme resumes with a training session at 3.30 on Wednesday afternoon. "We'll concentrate very hard in training this week," Hitzfeld announced on Monday. "We'll be working on our freshness again." Third-placed Stuttgart must be prepared to face a relaxed and re-energised Bayern side on Saturday.
