Sunday’s scoreless draw away to VfL Wolfsburg confirmed Bayern as 2007-8 Bundesliga champions, marked out on the pitch after the final whistle in the now traditional manner with celebratory showers of Bavarian beer sloshed from over-sized glasses. “It’ll be a huge party tonight, the team’s deserved it,” smiled chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, himself victim of a Weißbier shower courtesy of Bastian Schweinsteiger. “He’ll be sold,” Rummenigge quipped.

Reaction to VfL Wolfsburg v Bayern:

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: ”It’s been a fantastic season. The team has achieved great things and we’re very satisfied. It’ll be a huge party tonight, the team’s deserved it.”

Uli Hoeneß: ”I believe we deserve the title. It’s a mark of class when you wrap it up with three games to spare. It gives us something to build on. There’ll be a huge festival after the last game against Hertha BSC.”

Franz Beckenbauer: ”I think it’s deserved. They’ve led the league since opening day, and that doesn’t happen very often. It’s been a very, very good season. A lot of money was spent on new players, but it’s paid off, thank the Lord!”

Ottmar Hitzfeld: ”It’s been a unique season, because expectations were so high. The club spent heavily, so the pressure was immense, but winning the league makes it all worthwhile. I’m delighted for the club, because we’re back to where we belong as number one in Germany. And I’m also pleased I’ll be handing Jürgen Klinsmann a great team. This team is capable of mixing it right at the top again next season.”

Luca Toni: ”We’re champions, and I’m overjoyed. After the disappointment in the UEFA Cup, it’s party time now. I’m going to enjoy it.”

Mark van Bommel: ”We weren’t good today, but we deserve it based on the season as a whole. I want to praise today’s team, we came here without five, six or seven regulars. There was just a short period before Christmas when we didn’t play well, but otherwise we’ve been outstanding.”

Felix Magath (Wolfsburg coach): ”Unfortunately, we failed to take some excellent chances, and you don’t beat the champions if that happens. I can only be pleased for Bayern today, because we’ve thrown away two vital points. My congratulations to Bayern, and especially to coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. I know just how difficult it is to win both the league and the Cup.”
