Reaction to Bayern v Hamburg

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Feb 24, 2008 9:05 pm

After a 1-1 draw at home to closest pursuers Werder two weeks ago, Bayern repeated the result against fourth-placed Hamburg on Sunday, the second missed opportunity to shake off a determined title contender. “The team wasn’t able to cope with the pressure,” suggested Uli Hoeneß. Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was equally dismayed at his side’s failure to win the north v south showdown. “Obviously we’re not happy, because we’ve dropped two points,” the General offered.

Reaction to Bayern v Hamburg:

Uli Hoeneß: “I think both sides will be happy with the result. We’ve missed a chance to pull clear, because the team wasn’t able to cope with the pressure. It happened against Bremen and it’s happened again today. HSV were very defensive and only had two shots at goal. We’re having trouble forcing the ball over the line at the moment. The draw means the title race is far from over just now. It’s completely open again.“

Ottmar Hitzfeld: “Obviously we’re not happy, because we’ve dropped two points. We were definitely the better team, we were in their box a lot more often, and we had more chances. We were closer than they were to opening the scoring. HSV defended very well and were dangerous on the break. It was a big game with plenty of quality, where little things were always going to make the difference. We gifted Hamburg the opener, but we showed character to fight back. Ribéry came on and upped the pressure before laying on the equaliser. I’m annoyed that it wasn’t enough today. You can’t afford any mistakes in the big games.“

Huub Stevens (HSV coach): “You have to be delighted with a point in Munich. We battled very hard for the result and we probably enjoyed the rub of the green, but with just a shade more luck we might have taken even more from the match. I’ve always said Bayern are favourites for the title, and that remains the case, but we’ve made sure it’ll stay exciting, so I have nothing but praise for my team.“

Frank Rost (HSV keepr and captain): “After taking the lead, we were too confident of protecting the advantage until the end. At the throw-in which led to the goal we were too certain the ref would give it for us, and before we knew it, the ball was in the back of our net. Bayern punish you for that kind of thing. We want to stay up there at the top, and if that’s your aim, you’ve got to come away with something from Munich. Obviously we’d like to qualify for the Champions League next year, and I guess we won’t go down now.“
