Reaction to Arminia Bielefeld v Bayern

Bayern's trip to Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday ended in an unexpected and highly unwelcome 2-1 defeat, "although that's normally the kind of game we've got to be winning," Mark van Bommel lamented after opening his Bayern account in his first Bundesliga appearance. Boss Felix Magath felt the midweek Champions League fixture had contributed to his side's downfall.

Reaction to Arminia Bielefeld v Bayern

Felix Magath: "They've hit us twice from set plays. We started extremely well and took an early lead, but we were guilty of thinking we were home and dry. We eased off, and then Bielefeld ground us down in the second half. It's not the first time that's happened, when one team has played a midweek Champions League match and the other spends the week totally focused on the next match. But from now on we'll be back to our familiar rhythm, and I don't think we'll lose games like that in the future."

Mark van Bommel: "That's normally the kind of game we've got to be winning, and we wouldn't be hearing anything about Bielefeld afterwards. We've thrown away three points here today, so we have to take all three against Aachen next Saturday."

Philipp Lahm: "They made it very difficult for us, although we basically prevented them creating chances. But we've let in two goals from set pieces, which is devastating. We made a handful of chances, but at the end of the day we were below par in front of goal. We should have been more determined going forward, as we'd have created more by way of chances."

Thomas von Heesen (Bielefeld coach): "We're at the limit in terms of injuries, so it was vital we showed the right attitude and pushed Bayern all the way. We rode our luck in certain phases of the game, but at the end of the day we deserved to win. We're not in a position to play the kind of football I want to see at the moment, so our only choice is to battle away. It worked out for us today."

The players clearly looked like they lacked motivation. But we were a bit unlucky as well, because we hit 2 posts...
