Qualifying clash flavoured by Viennese wit

Postby FCBayernNews » Wed Aug 31, 2011 6:10 pm

David Alaba may have a Philippine mother and Nigerian father, but he is a Vienna native through and through. The folk from the Austrian capital are well known for their ready wit and quick quips, and David was true to form when he took leave of his Bayern team-mates before heading off to join the Austria squad. "I grinned and said we'd blow them away," the 19-year-old revealed in the Kronen Zeitung, "but they just laughed."

Alaba and a clutch of his club colleagues come face-to-face on Friday when the Austrians take on Germany in Gelsenkirchen in a Euro 2012 qualifier. A win would see the home side safely through to the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, "but it's Austria's last chance of staying in the race," Thomas Müller pointed out. The men from the Alpine republic have seven points from six games so far, behind Turkey (10 points from six) and Belgium (11 points from seven).

Müller: We have a clear target

"They'll be fired up," warned Müller, recalling the reverse fixture in Vienna three months ago where Germany scraped home 2-1. Mario Gomez, who scored both goals for the Germans that night, is out of Friday's rematch with a hamstring injury. Alaba was credited with an assist for his country's goal, when defender Arne Friedrich unwillingly forced the ball over his own line.

"Austria are tricky opponents," continued Müller, noting that Alaba and company have a habit of saving their best performances for games against leading teams. "But we intend to dominate the play from the start and score an early goal," the FCB striker continued, "we have a clear target: we want all three points for Germany."

Germany start as favourites

For his part, Alaba is aware the Germans are a serious proposition at any time, but especially on home soil. Joachim Löw's squad includes seven Bayern stars, and Alaba has been warning his fellow countrymen about the quality in the FCB contingent. "There won't be any mistakes from Neuer in goal. Lahm, Badstuber and Boateng are class defenders and you'll hardly ever get past them. Kroos is technically perfect, Müller is a born goalscorer, and Schweinsteiger is the heart of the team," he was quoted as saying.

Naturally enough, an ironic gag was always likely to feature at some point. It came when Alaba was reminded of an fcbayern.de interview with Boateng, in which the newly arrived defender spoke of his warm reception at Bayern - except that "this Austrian" Alaba was impossible to understand due to his strong Viennese dialect. It was, of course, all a joke: David happened to be sitting next to Jerome at the time. But Alaba seems to be having the last laugh: "I've been giving him extra tuition, but he's still not getting it."

Alaba seems like a very joyful fellow. No wonder Ribery likes hanging out with him!
