Punishing workout for Schweinsteiger and Co

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Aug 13, 2012 5:40 pm

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Claudio Pizarro and Mitchell Weiser completed an arduous and demanding fitness workout at the Säbener Strasse on Monday morning, but still stayed behind to sign autographs for the hordes of kids and parents who had come to watch. "Bastian, Bastian," the fans chorused - and the FCB vice captain was beaming from ear to ear when he finally set off for the dressing room.

The player's delight stemmed both from the supporters' applause and a problem-free session out on the practice ground. Sweat poured in buckets as Schweinsteiger, Pizarro and Weiser worked out while the sun beat down. After tackling an obstacle course, stamina building runs and a series of sprints, the players completed a round of shooting practice, with Tom Starke and Lukas Raeder keeping goal. All in all, the session included a number of exercises replicating match situations.

Schweinsteiger aggravated an earlier ankle injury in the LIGA total! Cup meeting with Hamburg a week ago, but was able to resume the team schedule on Saturday. Now, Jupp Heynckes says it is "highly probable" that the Germany midfielder will return to action in Wednesday's friendly away to fourth division SV Seligenporten, the final warm-up match of the summer before the DFB Cup first round trip to Regensburg on Monday 20 August.

"Bastian isn't feeling any pain at the moment so we're bringing him back gradually," explained Heynckes. This was the reason Schweinsteiger sat out Sunday's Supercup meeting with Dortmund: "He'd certainly have been able to play 20, 30 or 45 minutes, but we didn't want that. He mustn't put himself under pressure. I'm convinced he'll be playing his best football again in just a few weeks," Heynckes said.

Shakedown for Lahm, Gustavo and Can

Alongside Schweinsteiger, Weiser, Starke, Raeder and Pizarro, who reported back for a second session in the afternoon, the crowd on Monday morning also saw Philipp Lahm, Luiz Gustavo and Emre Can in action, as the trio spent half an hour on a regeneration jog. Injured stars Mario Gomez, Manuel Neuer, David Alaba, Rafinha and Diego Contento reported for treatment and sports rehab training in the performance centre. The remaining players in the squad are away until Thursday on international duty.

Schweinsteiger is not what he was anymore. I'm starting to lose hope for his fitness and his "original-self" coming back at 100%
