Potential foes include Kazan, Udine and Twente

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:40 pm

In Friday's draw for Champions League qualifying, Bayern will face one of Odense, Rubin Kazan, Twente Enschede, FC Zurich or Udinese Calcio. The draw takes place at UEFA's Swiss headquarters in Nyon at midday. fcbayern.de will be on the spot to bring you the latest news as it happens.

Wednesday evening saw the return fixtures in the third round of pre-qualifying. Kazan beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 for a 4-1 aggregate victory. The men from Zurich overcame Standard Liège 1-0 after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Danish representatives Odense thrillingly overcame Panathinaikos 4-3 in Athens after a 1-1 draw in the first meeting, while a goalless draw was enough for Twente following a 2-0 home win over Vaslui in the first leg. Like Bayern, Udine are automatic qualifiers for the play-offs.

Lahm calls for focus

Arsenal, Olympique Lyon, Lisbon giants Benfica and Villarreal also enter the qualifying competition at this stage. Bayern and these clubs are seeded for the draw by virtue of their UEFA club coefficients, and therefore cannot meet one another. Germany's most successful club boast the best coefficient of all the teams in the qualifying round.

However, Bayern's potential opponents include three clubs who finished runners-up in their domestic leagues last season, namely Twente, Odense and Zurich. Udinese and Rubin Kazan finished fourth in the Italian and Russian league competitions respectively. "Regardless of who we're drawn to play, I'm sure we'll go into both games fully focused and determined, because we don't want any questions about our determination to compete in the Champions League proper," declared FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Director of sport Christian Nerlinger added his agreement: "These are two exceptionally important matches for Bayern Munich, but I'm convinced it'll all go well."

Play-offs in mid-August

The chairman, the director of sport and everyone connected with the Munich club will be glued to events in Nyon on Friday lunchtime. The first leg of the play-offs takes place just a week later on 16 or 17 August, with the return the following week on 23 or 24 August.

Bayern have twice had to qualify for the Champions League group stage in the past, successfully overcoming Belgrade clubs on both occasions. FCB beat FK Obilic 5-1 on aggregate in 1998/99, and beat Partizan Belgrade by a 6-1 aggregate margin in 2002/03.

Why didn't Appudds predict whom we'll play two years ago? Then we'd all know

I'm guessing Rubin, just because I don't want Bayern to face'em.
My luck tends to work that way.
I'll paint any car for 3.95.
