Only five Reds on international duty

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Aug 23, 2007 10:02 am

The Bayern squad features six current Germany internationals, but Philipp Lahm will be the only representative of the club to take to the hallowed turf at the new Wembley on Wednesday evening for a prestige friendly against England. Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Marcell Jansen, Lukas Podolski and Jan Schlaudraff are all out of their country’s first match of the new season with injury.

Schweinsteiger (back) will be doubly dismayed at having to withdraw from the squad, as the midfielder had named the fixture as his target for a comeback to the international scene. Germany regulars Klose (knee ligaments), Jansen (stretched ligament) and Podolski (rehab after knee surgery), and squad player Schlaudraff (rehab), would naturally also have preferred to play a part in the match.

Wembley trip ‘an honour’

Apart from the Bayern quintet, Löw is also without team captain Michael Ballack, Torsten Frings, German Player of the Year Mario Gomez, Clemens Fritz, Tim Borowski and newcomer Sami Khedira. “It’s a long injury list, and it’s beginning to be a cause for concern. But we have to make the best of it and approach the trip with confidence,“ Löw urged.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge underlined the prestige nature of the fixture. “It'll be a great honour for the players in this marvellous new stadium. It's only the second international since the stadium re-opened. The players will be totally fired up,” the club chairman told . Rummenigge has positive personal memories of the “old” Wembley. “I scored both goals in our 2-1 win there in 1982,” the former world-class striker recalled.

Toni returns to Italy squad

On the other side of the Alps, Bayern hitman Luca Toni looks set for a return to Italy duty after scoring twice in his first two appearances for Munich. The 30-year-old has been named in coach Roberto Donadoni’s squad for a friendly against Hungary in Budapest. Hamit Altintop, scorer of Bayern’s third goal in the 4-0 win over Bremen last Saturday, travels with the Turkey senior squad for a friendly in Romania.

Franck Ribery made his way to Paris on Sunday, where France boss Raymond Domenech assembled a 35-man squad for two matches against Slovakia. The World Cup runners-up meet the Slovaks on 21 August in Senec, before the second match in the double-header 24 hours later in Trnava, although France will field a ‘B’ team on that occasion.

Fürstner for U-21s

Finally, Stephan Fürstner found himself packing a suitcase at short notice on Sunday after the midfielder was called up by Germany U-21 boss Dieter Eilts as a late replacement for a friendly against Ireland in Fürth on Tuesday. Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will simply be hoping to welcome the half-dozen international travellers back to Munich on Thursday with no new injuries to report.
