Olic makes comeback, Alaba out of luck

Postby FCBayernNews » Thu Aug 11, 2011 8:40 am

Sixteen Bayern stars were away with their international teams this week. Arjen Robben and Diego Contento were back in Munich by Wednesday afternoon, while eight Germany men plus Luiz Gustavo featured in the home side's meeting with Brazil in Stuttgart. Of the remaining five Munich internationals, none came away from midweek duty with a win. fcbayern.de reviews Wednesday's action.

Whatever the result, it was always going to be a special evening for Ivica Olic, as the Bayern striker pulled on a Croatia shirt for the first time since sustaining a serious injury ten months ago. Olic came on for the second half against Ireland in Dublin and performed with credit, although neither he nor any other player found the target and the game ended goalless. Ivi was at the centre of a controversial incident when he was the victim of what looked like a premeditated foul by Darron Gibson, but fortunately the likeable Croat was able to continue. Daniel Pranjic watched the game from the bench.

Clean sheet for Van Buyten

By contrast, David Alaba started for Austria against Slovakia and completed the 90 minutes. The Bayern youngster came within inches of opening the scoring after 11 minutes, but he was unable to prevent his side falling to a 2-1 defeat. The Austrians, who play Germany in EURO 2012 qualifying on 2 September, were the better team on the night, but fell behind to a 21st-minute own goal, before Robert Jez doubled the Slovaks' lead on the half-hour. Bundesliga starlet Erwin Hoffer pulled one back for the home team in the second half.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Ukraine were defeated at the death in Metalist as Sweden's Tobias Hysen netted the only goal of a dour game. There is clearly plenty of work ahead for Tymo and company before they co-host the 2012 European finals next summer. Finally, Slovenia played out a goalless stalemate with Belgian, for whom Daniel van Buyten was a tower of strength at centre-half.
