Nineteen-strong squad for cup showdown

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Jul 31, 2011 6:30 pm

The Bayern party which set off for Braunschweig on Sunday afternoon included all the club's fit first-team players. Even in advance of the morning training session, coach Jupp Heynckes had indicated he would take a 19-strong squad to Lower Saxony for the DFB Cup first round clash away to the team lying top of the German second division. "And I'll nominate 18 of them for the match," the boss indicated.

The only players not travelling to Lower Saxony are Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry and Breno. However, there was positive news of all three injured players on Sunday. Robben, currently recovering from a sprained right ankle, could well be fit in time for next Sunday's Bundesliga opener at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

"Arjen is physically fit, but he's not as confident as he could be. He's still feeling a little bit of pain," Heynckes reported after talking to the Dutch winger. Robben will now continue his sports rehabilitation programme, "and in all probability, he'll feature against Mönchengladbach."

Jogging for Ribéry and Breno

Ribéry is making equally good progress. The France superstar, who twisted his left ankle and damaged ligaments in training last week, has been out of plaster since Friday. "He's worked very hard in the weights room," revealed Heynckes, who expects the player to resume jogging on Monday. "After that, we'll see if there is any reaction and check on how he feels."

Breno (knee) is already beyond that stage of recovery. The Brazilian was running again on Friday and appears to have come through a testing programme without a reaction. "Breno was fine afterwards," the coach reported, "I hope he's finally able to work without any more interruptions, so he actually regains full fitness."
