Nerlinger: We neglected the basics

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Nov 27, 2011 8:50 pm

After losing in Mainz and slipping to third in the Bundesliga table, Bayern should look hard at themselves, according to Christian Nerlinger. "We lacked the basics: aggression, keeping it tight, and stopping your opponents creating chances," the director of sport lamented. However, Nerlinger is still convinced the players will "dig deep and win all four matches" in the league and cup prior to the winter break.

Reaction to Mainz v Bayern:

Christian Nerlinger: "We basically have to give a lot of credit to Mainz, but obviously, after a defeat like this, we have to start by looking at ourselves. The trend in the Bundesliga is negative for us - we've lost three of the last five matches, and that's made itself felt in the table. It's not running the way it sometimes has, and that's when you have to fall back on certain fundamentals: the necessary aggression, keeping it tight, stopping your opponents creating chances. I saw none of that whatsoever today, especially in the first half. Despite it all, I have enormous belief in this team. I think they'll dig deep in the last three Bundesliga fixtures and in the cup, and win all four matches. We have a normal week of training ahead of us at last. That's good for us, so we can work through a few important matters. We've neglected the basics in our recent matches, and that's what we'll work to fix in the coming week."

Manuel Neuer: "We let ourselves be dragged into scrappy fights in midfield. We basically have so much quality in the team, but we didn't show it today, although we gave it everything we've got right to the end."

Thomas Tuchel (Mainz 05 coach): "You can devise a tactical plan and communicate it to the team, but the team has to believe in it and translate it into action. We were smart and clever today, so all credit to my players. We've been heading in the right direction for a few weeks now - and obviously, a result like this against Bayern Munich is a massive help."

Andreas Ivanschitz (Mainz 05): "That was a very good performance from us, a first-class team display for the full 90 minutes. A lot of people thought we could never beat Bayern, so this performance rates as very good indeed. And I do think we deserved it today."

Marco Caligiuri (Mainz 05): "We got stuck in and won our tackles right from the start. We definitely rose above ourselves today, and we were rewarded for it too. You can't guarantee that you'll go to the limit and beyond against Bayern Munich."
