Nerlinger: We have to get our act together fast

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:30 pm

The FCB stars left Freiburg's MAGE SOLAR stadium on Saturday evening with their heads down and without saying a word. Barely 30 yards separated the team bus from the dressing room, but the short distance included a tough-to-stomach walk through the Mixed Zone, packed with reporters seeking statements about the evening's goalless draw with the Bundesliga's bottom club.

"Today, we've not seen the Bayern Munich we want to see," Christian Nerlinger stated, declaring himself "very pensive" after a "very sobering evening" in the Breisgau region. The 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Freiburg means FCB have slipped to third in the table, four points off champions Borussia Dortmund. "If we carry on like we've done today, we won't be playing a role in the title race," Nerlinger warned.

The FCB director of sport confessed he was "extremely mystified" by Munich's first-half performance: "We lacked everything you need for successful football," he lamented, "the basics, like aggression, attitude and work-rate. The destination of the title is no longer in our own hands." Echoing that observation, captain Philipp Lahm described the result as "a major setback."

Coach Jupp Heynckes made no secret of his "deep dissatisfaction" with his team's display in the first 45 minutes. "In our preparations for the match, I told my players we were up against opponents who would be very aggressive, full of running, and hard-tackling. And that's exactly what we came up against in the first half," the boss said after the match.

"We were asleep for the whole of the first half, we were much too sluggish. We obviously thought we'd manage here by playing pretty football," Heynckes continued, "what we should have done is pick up the pace and fight back." Lahm was just as dismayed as his boss: "It's very disappointing, because we came here with our sights set high, but we invested far too little in the first half. Even here in Freiburg, that'll never be enough to win."

By his own admission, Heynckes was "fairly loud and energetic" during the half-time interval, and Bayern were much improved after the break. "We applied pressure and created chances. The team played the way I want them to," said the coach, "the way we should normally be doing for 90 minutes: with bite, passion and power. My team showed a different face."

Alarm bells ringing

Nerlinger felt the second-half display was "a little better, but still not enough," and FCB were duly obliged to leave for home with only a single point. "It does appear that a few of the players haven't grasped what's at stake," the director of sport admonished, "we're under huge pressure in the league now. We were eight points ahead, but now we're four points behind. It's extremely worrying. As of now, the alarm bells are ringing at FC Bayern."

There are just four days until Munich play again, away to FC Basel in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg, before which Heynckes announced a "no-holds barred" analysis of events in Freiburg, together with the necessary conclusions. "We have to get our act together as fast as possible and present a different face," demanded Nerlinger. "We need fundamental changes very quickly indeed, or it'll be a very disappointing season for Bayern Munich."

Far from it, in my opinion. But these next few weeks will decide whether we have a season to remember or one to forget
