Match report: Benfica v Bayern

The fans who came to the Al-Ahli stadium early on Monday evening for the first Mohammed bin Rashid International Football Championship 2007 semi-final between Marseilles and Lazio were obliged to wait an extra ten minutes before kick-off as the referee took part in evening prayers, but although the second semi between Benfica and Bayern kicked off on time, the crowd was late departing for home as the game went to a penalty shoot-out following a goalless stalemate in normal time.

The serial Portuguese champions enjoyed the better of the luck from the spot and ran out 4-3 winners, leaving the German double winners to face Olympique Marseilles in Wednesday's third-place play-off (<b>Highlights on FCB.tv</b>) after the French cracks fell 3-1 against the Rome outfit.

<b>Van Bommel against the bar</b>

Bayern shaded the first 45 minutes against the Lisbon side, although chances were few and far between. Mark van Bommel was unlucky to see a 20-yard thunderbolt cannon off the bar on seven minutes, but Benfica keeper Moretto was rarely troubled as efforts by Roque Santa Cruz (25, 28) and Ali Karimi (42) drifted wide of the target.

Oliver Kahn was also a spectator for much of the half, although the Munich shot-stopper was almost beaten in stoppage time after Nunu Gomes released Simao for a clear run on goal, only for the Portugal star to slide his shot wide of the upright.

<b>Dour second period</b>

Coach Felix Magath used his allotted contingent of six substitutes at half-time, but the fact that the players only resumed training a couple of days ago became increasingly apparent as a few passes went astray from heavy legs.

The side lying third in Portugal have also yet to reach peak form, so the crowd was treated to a second half short on highlights until a frantic closing phase as both sides had chances prompted by fading concentration in defence. However, the score remained goalless and the game went to penalties, where van Bommel and Claudio Pizarro proved unable to convert.

<b>Hoeneß not upset</b>

Bayern's disappointment at not making the final was of the less tragic variety. "We weren't bad at times, and you can't expect too much after only three days' training," van Bommel reasoned. "We wanted to give a decent account of ourselves, and that's what we did," Uli Hoeneß observed, "I have no criticism of the team."

Oh well, at least this gives us the chance to play Marseille though. Perhaps we lost on purpose to be able to play Marseille and take a closer look to Ribery ;)
