Martinez: German football suits me well

Postby FCBayernNews » Tue Feb 26, 2013 1:00 pm

Javi Martinez has well and truly arrived at Bayern. He scored his second goal for the club in last Saturday's Bremen clash, and reaped a chorus of praise afterwards. "We were hoping Martinez would really get going after a full preparation phase, and it's proved the case," said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, "as we can now see, he's exceptionally valuable to the club when he's physically fit."

Prior to the DFB Cup showdown against Borussia Dortmund, fcbayern.de talked to the Spaniard, who switched to Bavaria six months ago. What is he expecting on Wednesday evening? Has he settled into the Bundesliga? And how does he cope with the snow?

Interview: Javi Martinez

fcbayern.de: Javi, it's the eve of the big cup clash with Dortmund. What are you expecting from the match?
Javi Martinez: Obviously, the Bundesliga fixture in early December is still fresh in the memory. It was a good encounter and very intense. I'm expecting the same in the cup quarter-final, although there's even more pressure because it's a knockout match. But we're ready.

What should Bayern be most wary of?
Everything. Dortmund are very strong, with top players like Lewandowski, Reus and Götze, who are incredibly dangerous.

It was before your time in Munich, but Bayern lost to Dortmund in the cup final last season.
I saw highlights of the match on TV. This rematch does have a little bit of a revenge feel to it. It's an additional boost to our motivation.

You scored your second goal in a red shirt last Saturday against Bremen. And you almost snatched a late winner in the Bundesliga meeting with Dortmund.
Yes, almost. But unfortunately the keeper made a very good save from my header. I'm delighted it went better against Bremen. I'm not the kind of player who scores a lot, but I hope it'll be more. We have some really good dead ball specialist for free-kicks like the one against Bremen, and we can hurt our opponents with those.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge praised you to the skies on Saturday, saying everyone can now see why Bayern signed you. Do you sense you've improved since the winter break?
Unlike the summer, I had a two-week vacation over Christmas, more time off than I've had in years. It did me the world of good and I think I can be even better in the second half of the season.

How difficult was it acclimatising to the Bundesliga?
The transition isn't easy and you have to allow time for it. But I think German football suits me well. It's physical and direct, and I like that.

Who's been helping you settle in?
Everyone knows it's all new to me here, and they help me whenever they can. I'm getting special help from Bastian, Luiz and Tymo, the lads who I tend to play closest to on the pitch.

How are you coping with playing football in the snow?
It's very cold but I can handle that. We do occasionally get snow where I come from back home, in fact.
