Lucio vows to end season on a high

Reporters and diehard fans monitoring the Bayern squad as they warmed down after Wednesday training spotted Lucio deep in animated conversation with Martin Demichelis, the Brazilian gesticulating vigorously to help illustrate the points he was making. It appeared Lucio was busy describing positioning and moves with the Argentine, who listened diligently and intently.

Observations from the initial training sessions of the week suggest a significant change is in the offing. Practically all the routines centred on defensive play have featured Demichelis rather than Daniel van Buyten alongside Lucio. “We’ve simply been testing one of our options,” assistant coach Michael Henke informed fcbayern.de. Nevertheless, all the signs are that Lucio and Demichelis will form the central defensive pairing when Bayern entertain Hamburg on Saturday.

Busy day for medics

Question-marks of a more sinister nature surround other areas of the champions’ potential weekend line-up. Mark van Bommel (ankle), Lukas Podolski (calf), Owen Hargreaves (knee) and Claudio Pizarro (strain) all sat out Wednesday’s session.

“All four rate as doubtful,” Henke confirmed. Pizarro’s fitness is causing the least amount of concern. “He wanted to train today, but he’s had a problem for the last couple of days, so we told him to rest,” Henke reported. The Peru striker is expected to resume the squad programme on Thursday, but the other three could remain on the sidelines.

Lucio issues run-in appeal

“We have to pull together and make sure we turn the corner,” Lucio told a lunchtime news conference. Despite the worsening injury situation and Bayern’s disappointing position in the table, the 28-year-old has by no means abandoned hope of the club finishing in a Champions League qualifying spot.

“There’s definitely still a small chance, and we have to keep believing in that chance right to the end,” the Brazil skipper insisted. “We have to stick together as a team as give it everything we have on the field of play. Our next match against HSV is extremely important for us.” Lucio undoubtedly said something very similar as he completed his lap of the training ground with Demichelis.

Is Pizarro training today? Any news?
I hope he can play on Saturday. I'd hate to see Santa Cruz starting in attack.
