Lucio ruled out of Barcelona clash

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Apr 06, 2009 6:30 pm

Two days ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Barcelona, there was good news and bad news from the Bayern camp. The bad news is that centre-back Lucio has been ruled out of the match with a groin strain, and is also rated doubtful for Saturday's Bundesliga meeting at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. The good news is that Daniel van Buyten has returned to contention for the midweek fixture.

The Belgian, who has been on compassionate leave in his home country for family reasons for the last two weeks, returned to the Säbener Strasse on Monday and completed the squad training session. "I'm thrilled to have Daniel back with us," commented Jürgen Klinsmann, revealing he had spoken to the player every day on the phone. "We hope he'll now come with us to Barcelona."

Priority to the family

The decision to travel has been left to Van Buyten, as his family issue remains critical. It was entirely down to the defender whether he joined the party for Barcelona, Klinsmann confirmed. "It's a family situation, which takes absolute priority over football."

With Lucio out and Van Buyten far from a definite starter, Klinsmann may only have two recognised centre-backs at his disposal for the Camp Nou clash, Martin Demichelis and 19-year-old Breno. Midfielder Andreas Ottl was obliged to deputise in central defence for half an hour of the weekend defeat in Wolfsburg after Lucio hobbled off injured.

No hand-wringing

Philipp Lahm described the loss of Lucio as "very bitter. He's Brazil captain, and he has the class and international quality to stand up to Barcelona." Karl-Heinz Rummenigge preferred to look to the future: "Someone else will have to play in his place, there's no point wringing our hands."
